Cook a Meal at the Clark Center (age 4+) *MLK 2012*

Hands On Managed projects offer you an opportunity to join a group of volunteers on a done-in-a-day project led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader

Be one of 2,100 volunteers honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to communities throughout the Greater Portland area.

From stock in the Clark Center's food closet, we'll prepare a meal and then serve it to the residents in this 90-bed transitional housing shelter for men.

Since 1969, Transition Projects has helped thousands of people transcend the streets of Portland. On any given day — today, for example — they’re making the difference in hundreds of lives, providing the tools people need as they transition from homelessness to housing. They offer long-term shelter, plus a unique mix of valuable services that helps people overcome their own barriers to stable housing and employment. Services like job training, continuing education, alcohol, drug and mental health counseling, and more. Along the way, they also impart the kind of valuable life skills most of us take for granted, such as how to manage a checking account, write a resume, fill out a job application, and, ultimately, negotiate a lease. None of these things can happen without more than a thousand annual volunteers, and help from people like you!

**Win a Kindle Fire by recruiting four or more volunteers to join you over MLK Weekend! Click here for details.

Project Requirements:

  • Please fill out this MLK Adult & Youth Waiver and bring it with you to the project. All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
  • This project is great for families with children 4 and up.  There must be one adult present for every three youth, and young children must stay in the kitchen area at all times. Volunteers under age 14 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above.
Note: Many people have trouble finding the Clark Center. It is located under the Hawthorne bridge near the corner of Hawthorne and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., in Southeast Portland.
