Land Tending at Leach Botanical Garden (age 12+) Referral

Gather with us in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden for a morning of land tending and appreciation! This work helps to increase Pacific Northwest ecosystem diversity in an expanding habitat area and supports our collaborative Back 5 educational project. No experience necessary!

The Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem in outer SE Portland. Beyond the manicured paths of the garden are several acres of forests and fields which have become overrun by Himalayan blackberry, English ivy, and other invasive weeds. The garden needs your help to become a healthy ecosystem again!

What: Weed removal, grubbing, and weeding.

Where: Leach Botanical Garden

What to bring: Bring a filled water bottle and snacks. You’re welcome to bring gloves and tools, if you want to use your own.

What to wear: Dress for the weather! Wear long thick pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Bring a raincoat or a hat and sunscreen, as appropriate.

What we provide: Gloves, tools, and instruction on how to safely use tools and what plants we’ll remove.

Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an attentive adult. This work is around and near prickly plants and can be challenging for young children. We recommend children ages 12 and up for this type of event.

The Johnson Creek Watershed Council was established in 1995 by community members committed to restoring Johnson Creek, a vibrant creek with many challenges. Our mission is to promote restoration and stewardship of a healthy Johnson Creek Watershed through sound science and community engagement.
