Help Out in our Free Community Store (age 14+) *Impact Week 2025*

Community Impact Week, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, powered by Hands On Greater Portland

About the Program No one should be hungry, unclothed, or unloved within our reach. The Giving Closet is a free community store for those in need. If you just can't make ends meet, we would love to help fill in the gaps. We work hard to create a friendly, clean, and organized shopping space where you'll find not only what you need but have fun getting to know our amazing staff and volunteers too!

About the Project

There will be 2 project options during this time:

From Chaos to Couture: Behind the scenes
Volunteers will jump right into the lifeblood of our Free Community Store. The donation warehouse is where it all starts as we sort, fold, hang, and get everything ready for display on our shopping floor. There will be a variety of duties including some cleaning so come ready to do a little bit of everything as you make us sparkle and shine!

Fashion Guru: In the store

Volunteers will welcome and interact with guests, assist with keeping the shopping floor clean, collecting hangers, helping to disperse food to the families, and many other duties related to a retail type atmosphere.

Volunteers will receive a brief orientation beginning in the lunchroom with staff, regular volunteers and project volunteers for a Q & A session about the organization.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring a sack lunch to eat together during this meet and greet.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 17 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.

  • All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project.

  • If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. In the spirit of creating an atmosphere where people from all parts of our community are coming together to volunteer,

Team Captains are only able to reserve up to 50% of the spots on any individual Community Impact Week Service Project. Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project.
