Blessings in a Backpack

https://blessingsinabackpack.org/

A nonreligious organization, Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children who might otherwise go hungry.

Every Friday afternoon, Blessings in a Backpack provides bags of six to eight ready-to-eat kid-friendly nutritious food items to local elementary students in and around Portland whose families might be struggling. Blessings’ food sacks are meant just for kids - in individual shelf-stable servings that can be eaten by a child without assistance from an adult. A weekend food sack typically includes two servings of protein, a fruit serving (such as an applesauce pouch, 100% vegetable juice box, or a fruit cup packaged in natural juices), two high-fiber low-sugar whole grain cereals, plus other snacks or bars to help stave off hunger between Friday afternoon and Monday’s school breakfast. Children who receive Blessings in a Backpack know they’ll have something to eat every weekend, no matter their home situation, and families are grateful to know they’ll be able to stretch their food dollars just a bit further.
