SMART Program (Metro Area)

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is an early intervention literacy program of the Oregon Children's Foundation. SMART pairs volunteers with kindergarten through third grade students who need assistance becoming successful readers. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of one hour per week to read with two students for a half an hour each. Reading is done on a one-on-one basis in a supervised SMART room or area. Students who participate in the program are given the opportunity to choose two new books each months from the SMART collection to take home and keep. A SMART school coordinator runs each SMART program, works with teachers to select participating students, and sets the reading schedule. The on-site coordinator is there to train, support, and supervise volunteers. The Metro SMART Program has volunteer opportunities throughout Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties.
