SMART Reading (Portland Metro Area)

http://www.SMARTReading.org

SMART Reading is an early literacy nonprofit that envisions an Oregon where all kids can realize their full potential through reading. We engage community volunteers to help PreK-third grade children become confident readers by providing one-on-one reading time that sparks joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.

Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of one hour per week to read with two students for a half an hour each. Reading is done on a one-on-one basis in a supervised SMART Reading room or area. Students who participate in the program are given the opportunity to choose two new books each month from the SMART Reading book collection to keep. A SMART Reading volunteer Site Coordinator runs each SMART Reading program, works with teachers to select participating students, and sets the reading schedule. The on-site coordinator is there to train, support, and supervise volunteers. The Metro SMART Reading program has volunteer opportunities throughout Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties.
