Saturday Hospitality at Operation Nightwatch in SE (age 18+) *MLK Weekend 2020*

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. King through meaningful service to our community: "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Enjoy handing out snacks or helping give out blankets and socks? Perhaps you like conversing, or listening to fascinating life stories?

Our SE Hospitality Center offers our guests a safe, warm place to go and know they can find a welcoming, respectful environment. Our simple mission is to reach out to them, nurturing relationship. We welcome each person who comes to us, just as they are. Operation Nightwatch is an drop-in center and a place of friendship and community for those living without housing in SE Portland.

Volunteers play an important role in providing assistance, openness, and social companionship to those who come through our doors each Saturday evening. Please dress warmly and bring layers, as we might have you outside for a small portion of the evening. Volunteers are asked to be present from 4:15- 8:30 pm. Upon your arrival at 4:15 pm we will provide an orientation so you'll know how the evening will proceed. This orientation provides important information about safety, and helping with the set up, so please arrive on time!

While other agencies main focus is to provide housing, food, and clothing, Operation Nightwatch’s unique vision is to address people's social isolation. We welcome each person who comes to us, just as they are. No one is required to conform to any particular belief or faith practice in order to receive our services.

Project Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to attend this project.

  • If you plan to bring guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. In the spirit of creating an atmosphere where people from all parts of our community are coming together to volunteer,

Team Captains are required to provide names and email addresses for each team member (over the age of 13) in order to hold spaces on a volunteer project or they may be removed from the project. Questions? Email teams@handsonportland.org

IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed.
